Why is 15 September celebrated as engineers day?

In India, Engineers Day is celebrated on September 15th each year to honor the birthday of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a renowned Indian engineer and statesman. Sir M. Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, and he is widely regarded as one of India’s greatest engineers and a pioneering figure in the field of engineering.


Sir M. Visvesvaraya made significant contributions to engineering, particularly in the areas of civil engineering and infrastructure development. He played a pivotal role in designing and supervising the construction of several important dams, bridges, and irrigation systems in India, including the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Karnataka, which is still in operation today.


History of National Engineers Day

Service to the Princely State of Mysore: Sir M. Visvesvaraya served as the Diwan (Prime Minister) of the princely state of Mysore (now part of Karnataka) from 1912 to 1918. During his tenure, he implemented various progressive policies and initiated numerous infrastructure projects. His work in Mysore led to significant advancements in irrigation, education, and industrialization.


Recognition and Honors: Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s contributions to engineering and nation-building were widely recognized. He received numerous awards and honors, including being knighted by King George V in 1915 and receiving the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1955.


Celebration of Engineers Day: In recognition of Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to society, the Indian government and engineering organizations decided to celebrate his birthday, September 15th, as Engineers Day. The first Engineers Day was celebrated in India in 1967, a few years after his passing in 1962.


Chandrayaan-3: Success of Engineers

Palanivel Veeramuthuvel, born on October 22, 1976, is a distinguished Indian aerospace engineer currently employed at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). With a stellar career marked by his remarkable expertise and dedication, he held the pivotal position of Project Director for the ambitious Chandrayaan-3 mission, a testament to his leadership and contributions to India’s space exploration endeavors.


Chandrayaan 3 represents far more than just a mission; it serves as a resounding testament to the remarkable heights human ingenuity can reach armed with the right tools, an unyielding determination, and perhaps a few cups of caffeine for those tireless nights.
